Francesco’s tour of Florence’s Old Walls is remarkable! It showed me a unique side of Florence, as he explained centuries of change in the city’s cultural and economic development, as well as the rise and fall of its most prominent families in antiquity. We saw the city’s magnificent ancient gates and learned about the important role the walls played in protecting Florence from outside dangers. We also learned about the modern realities of life in Florence, including the difficulties that young Florentians face finding housing in a city that is so popular with tourists from around the world. I enjoyed trekking up the hill to Forte Belvedere to see the beautiful view overlooking the city from Boboli Garden. Lastly, I loved our delicious lunch at a restaurant that is a favourite of the locals. This tour showed me a new and different side of Florence, and was the perfect mix of fun and informative. It was also a respite from the heat and busyness of the city’s main core. I look forward to revisiting the Old Walls the next time I’m in Florence!
