Embark on an adventure through the Fontainebleau Forest, a stunning expanse featuring an 8-mile (13 km) hiking route in one of the largest forests in France. Overview of the Fontainebleau Forest Hiking Experience
We will gather at 9 am at the Gare de Lyon station to catch a train to the Fontainebleau Avon station. After approximately 30 minutes on the train, our adventure begins with a 4-hour, 8-mile (13 km) hike through the largest forest in the Île-de-France region. Let's set off!
A Glimpse into History
The Fontainebleau Forest boasts a rich heritage, once serving as a favored retreat for royalty dating back to the 10th century. Notably, during the reign of Louis XIV, this forest became a hotspot for hunts and shooting expeditions. The allure of this natural sanctuary for nobility led to the construction of the Fontainebleau Château and a significant expansion of its wooded area, growing from approximately 8,000 hectares to a remarkable 25,000 hectares today!
A Natural Treasure
This beautiful forest encompasses two state-managed areas: the Trois Pignons and Fontainebleau, both home to diverse tree species. As you hike, you will engage with the exceptional biodiversity and geological features of a site recognized as a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. The trails meander through lush, untamed vegetation and striking sandstone formations, offering insights into why this enchanting landscape has inspired writers and painters like Musset and Flaubert since the 19th century. This captivating forest provides the perfect opportunity to unwind and immerse yourself in nature!
Your hiking adventure includes intermediate trails to ensure an enriching experience in the forest. There will be planned breaks to relax and enjoy the lunch you bring along. Following our hiking journey of around 4 hours, we will proceed to the Bois-Le-Roi train station to return to Paris Gare de Lyon station.
