Javier is a very cheerful guy. He claims to have learned English from watching Netflix series and if that's true, it comes out as a delightful surprise: although not "grammatically perfect", he manages to explain quite well everything you need to know. He points out the significance of Santa Marta in the history of Colombia and takes you through all the major monuments and historical sites in the city. However, his main focus is social and artistic expressions in the form of Graffiti walls (of which there are many in the city, and he claims to have helped make some of them), as well as showing tourists what he claims to be the "real Colombia" (informal street commerce, where people deal in counterfeit products or maybe even contraband in broad daylight, in full view of policemen patrolling the streets). On a more positive note, he also invited us to taste some local drinks (Corossol juice and Aguapanela), as well as made plenty of recommendations of places to eat, to party or to buy local craft work. Some of these places will even give you discounts or free stuff if you tell them that Javier recommended them. Although not the kind of tour I was expecting when I signed up, it certainly was a very positive experience that I can easily recommend to anyone visiting Santa Marta.
