There are few touristic things to do in Casablanca, so spending to hours with Sufyan in the Habous Medina was one of the highlights of our brief stop in this city. Sufyan is sincere and personable, speaks English quite well, and is genuinely enthusiastic to impart his knowledge of the history of this neighborhood. It was interesting to see the Villas on the road up to the King's palace, and learn how the Habous Medina we were about to enter was a 20th century creation modeled after other ancient Medinas in Morocco. We stopped in front of homes and Sufyan quietly explained some of their uniquely Moroccan characteristics, such as the use of the small door nested inside a larger door, and the privacy layout which prevents one from being able to see into the home from the outside. We walked all through the marketplace and were never harassed by a vendor. It is a lovely area hidden away from the cacophony and grit of the city - so the tour was a welcome and interesting 2 hour respite. The other great thing was that throughout our time together, Sufyan was able to answer our questions about how people live in Morocco -: education, medicine & insurance, taxes, etc.
