Tour description

The Balat neighborhood is located on the sixth hill of the peninsula that made up the ancient Constantinople, between the Fener neighborhood, populated mainly by Greeks, and the Byzantine walls. It should be borne in mind that the Jewish population of Istanbul never formed ghettos but lived scattered inside and outside the walls, sharing the urban space with Christians, Greeks or Armenians, and Muslims. Logically there were several synagogues and next to the Armenian cemetery of Edirnekapi, outside the walls, the Hebrews had theirs. The city ended at the walls, on the other side were cemeteries and orchards. It will be precisely near the Edirnekapi, the Gate of Adrianople, where Pierre Loti will search and find the tomb of his beloved Aziyadé to take it as a souvenir for your living room in France. ⬇⬇⬇⬇⬇⬇⬇⬇⬇ Most of the Ottoman Jews came from Spain and Portugal, which, after the expulsion, adopted the name Sephardim, that is, from the Iberian Peninsula referred to as Sepharad. Willy Sperco states that about 200,000 arrived and that they were fairly well accepted at the court of Bayezid II (1481-1512) (2). The ones we have on this Tour; ✅ 1. The church of San Salvador de Chora 2. The palace of Blanquernea 3.The Greek Orthodox College ((also known as Red Castle), 5.Fener Greek Patriarchate 6. The Walls of Constantinople 7. The church of St. Mary of the Mongols 8. Vodina Street, which is the main artery 9. İncir ağacı Kahvesi (a photographic point) and much more ... The old streets, alternative shops, modern cafes, and the restoration of wooden houses
