Tour description

Arbat Street is one of the oldest and most famous in the city. A favorite point for visitors within their excursions. Its name comes from the Arabic word "arbad" which means "suburb". It is a pedestrian zone of more than a kilometer long that has been in operation since the 15th century, when it was inhabited by merchants and teachers. Towards the 18th century it began to be populated by representatives of the nobility. Since then it has become a prestigious and fashionable place, where professionals, as well as artists, poets and writers such as Alexander Pushkin, Sergey Rakhmaninov, Alexander Skryabin and Nikolay Gogol, among others, settled. Many of the buildings that remain today come from the 19th century, when much of Arbat had to be rebuilt due to the destruction caused by Napoleon's troops. Also in Soviet times, some of the most important architectural monuments in the area were demolished. Among the most significant constructions on Arbat Street is the 17th century Church of San Simeón; the Vakhtagov theater, originally from 1941 but rebuilt after the Second World War; the profitable house in Fijátova, the highest in the neighborhood; and the house-museum of Pushkin, a Russian poet who lived there in 1831. In addition, there are other monuments and statues such as that of Princess Turandot. Since 1970 Arbat became a pedestrian zone, and the historical monuments were joined by numerous shops and cafes. Today it is a bright, westernized and busy street, where you can find the best hotels, shops and restaurants in Moscow. Does not include Metro tickets.
