About the tour

Casablanca’s Habous Quarter called also The habous medina built in the 30s on the model of the traditional medina with its alleys, small squares, fountains, arcades and stone doors, its mosque, Moorish baths, kissariates (traditional stalls), and all the way to its architectural style, the Habous neighborhood follows the codes of an authentic ancient medina. Many people of Casablanca do not know that this neighborhood, designed to respond to the popular rural exodus before attracting wealthy traders from Fes and public servants, was built in the early 20th century. Located just behind the royal palace of Casablanca, today it is home to the headquarters of the Region.

This tour is a great opportunity to discover some of the most beautiful buildings in Casablanca : the Notre dame de Lourdes church , the liberty building , the royal palace , the mahkama du pasha , moulay youssef mosque and al Mohammadi mosque and many beautiful other places .

There are few touristic things to do in Casablanca, so spending to hours with Sufyan in the Habous Medina was one of the highlights of our brief stop in this city. Sufyan is sincere and personable, speaks English quite well, and is genuinely enthusiastic to impart his knowledge of the history of this neighborhood. It was interesting to see the Villas on the road up to the King's palace, and learn how the Habous Medina we were about to enter was a 20th century creation modeled after other ancient Medinas in Morocco. We stopped in front of homes and Sufyan quietly explained some of their uniquely Moroccan characteristics, such as the use of the small door nested inside a larger door, and the privacy layout which prevents one from being able to see into the home from the outside. We walked all through the marketplace and were never harassed by a vendor. It is a lovely area hidden away from the cacophony and grit of the city - so the tour was a welcome and interesting 2 hour respite. The other great thing was that throughout our time together, Sufyan was able to answer our questions about how people live in Morocco -: education, medicine & insurance, taxes, etc.

Sufyan provided an excellent walking tour around Casablanca, hitting all the major sites and providing background where relevant. Unlike other walking tours we’ve been on this was just the two of us which was great, but perhaps not for everyone.
