About the tour

Have you already visited the historic center of Brașov and you would like to explore the districts outside the tourist area? Well, you are right to do so as Brasov means more than the old medieval town, most of the locals living in the old workers’ districts built in communism.

Join me in a unique tour, specially designed for you to feel and explore the old communist atmosphere that you can still see in some parts of Brasov.

Learn about the rise and fall of the Romanian dictator Ceausescu;

Visit communist-era landmarks to see how the regime have left a permament mark on the city;

Hear stories about daily life under Communist regime;

Visit sites that played a key role in the 1989 revolution.

The tour starts in the Council Square with a short introduction into the history of communist Romania. We shall go then to the Revolution Square where you will see the headquarters of the old Communist Party. It is here that two years before communism fell the workers from Brasov organized a big meeting and rebellion against Nicolae Ceausescu, our ex-communist president.

You will see pictures with the tanks and the army fighting in the street in December 1989 and even the holes made by the bullets in the nearby buildings. If you are interested, we can also see the place where our heroes rest in peace.

Then we shall take the public bus or a taxi to get to one of the most famous workers’ districts in Brasov, dating back to the 1930's. On the site of the old tractor factory you will see tractor samples and buildings that remind of the industrial life of Brasov.

Here, you will find out a lot of interesting things about what life was like in communism. I lived 14 years under communism, my memories are fresh..

At present the old factory is part of o modern urban regeneration project, history and modern harmoniously blending. We shall have a nice walk along this brand new residential district and business camp next to one of the most beautiful shopping centers in Romania.

Before we take the bus/taxi back to the old town, we shall talk about the communist food and you will taste some Romanian candies, a brand born in communism.

You will also find out about the restaurants and pubs in Brasov, especially the ones recreating the communist atmosphere.

So, as a socialist slogan was saying: 'Travellers' of the World, Unite!' and join this tour to truly feel and understand the so called Golden Age of Romania.
