Hello! I have been Cecilia, art historian and tour guide for Rome for 5 years! In love with the city of Rome, its history, its curiosities and gastronomy, I give it voice in all my tours. Do you want to see Rome through my eyes? I love to travel, to know new places and new cultures that enrich me. I transmit this passion for travel and curiosity for the new in each of my visits.

About the tour

Created in 1555 at the wish of Pope Paul IV, the Ghetto welcomed the entire Jewish minority of Rome, from the rest of the peninsula, in addition to the population fleeing from Spain. With the papal bull cum nimis absurdum, Jews were forced to live in a specific area and set a number of rules, including wearing a distinctive yellow insignia. Living conditions were inhumane, with overcrowding inside damp, dark houses, and continued risk of flooding from the Tiber. We will walk through the suggestive alleys that remain of the original ghetto after the recovery of the 19th century. We will stop at the main monuments in the area, such as the Ottavia Portico, Piazza Mattei with the famous Fontana delle Tartarughe, without neglecting details of great interest, le Pietre di Inciampo. We will also relive the saddest events, the indelible stains of the city, such as the elimination and subsequent deportation of the Jews, which took place on October 16, 1943 during the German occupation.
