Hi! I am Diogo Valente Ribas, I am a graduate in Art History, graduated from the University of Coimbra. :) I have been a tour guide since 2014. I love meeting new people and teaching our history, culture, food, traditions, architecture, and lifestyle, among many other topics. Discover Belém and Sintra with me.
On this tour we will visit the city of Lisbon from the post-earthquake of 1755, with the Ponbalina reconstruction and medieval Lisbon, with the Alfama area and the Castle of São Jorge. We start at Praça dos Restauradores, which mentions the Restoration of 1640, where we have the opportunity to appreciate the beginning of Avenida da Liberdade and the ascent. We head towards Praça D. Pedro IV, named after Rossio, where we will have the opportunity to be in one of the busiest areas of Lisbon. Passing through the Rossio train station and discovering all the Art History that the architecture preserves. We have the panoramic view of the Santa Justa and Baixa Pombalina elevator. We continue to Praça da Figueira, where we have one of the most important views of the Castle of S. Jorge at the top of the hill. Here, we still have the sculpture of D. João I (a work from the 20th century) that defines and frames the landscape well. We follow Rua Augusta in the direction of Terreiro do Paço (Praça do Comércio) and on the perpendicular street of Nossa Senhora da Conceição we will go up to Sé de Lisboa. Passing through shops and traditional restaurants. First we arrive at the Church of S. Madalena. We continue to the Santuário do Santo Português more popular and of enormous devotion. We visit the crypt where Fernando Martins (Santo António) was born, it was his parents' house and the Church of Santo António was built. A few steps away we have the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maior - Sé de Lisboa. All Romanesque architecture comes from its 12th century matrix. This distant period of the reconquest of the city of Lisbon by the first King of Portugal D. Afonso Henriques. Then we go up to the Alfama area, enjoying the Santa Luzia viewpoint and the incredible landscape over the Tagus River. From where we observe a vast and complete area. Upon reaching the Castelo de S. Jorge at the top of the hill, our guided tour is over.
