The best places in Calp (old town)

From 1st March to 30th October

Do not miss this small and charming old town. Discover the history of Calp and its most lovely spots through its maze of streets and its stairs.

The old town of Calp is about 2 kilometres from the coast. Due to the constant threat of pirates and corsairs in ancient times, coastal towns used to move away from the coast, and build walled enclosures and fortifications to protect themselves, as Calp. This city had a wall around its old town to defend itself against pirate attacks.

Wandering quietly around this charming place to discover every single corner makes the old town of Calp beautiful. We could continue the indicated tourist tour through its small, narrow and cobbled streets, its lovely alleys full of plants and flowers, and its decorated stairs, or we could visit the ancient walls of the city, its churches, and the ancient Roman ruins.

One of the most important sites of the old town of Calp is the Torreó de la Peça, which is in the square Plaça de la Villa. It was part of a double defensive wall with artillery pieces that defended the city in the 15th century. It houses now the Museu del Col·leccionisme.

During the tour, you could also visit the parish church of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves, a special church in the middle of the square, in the heart of the old town. The history and archaeology museum, in the street Santíssim Crist, is the perfect place to discover the secrets of the past of this lovely city.

We can see several murals and colourful mosaics in their walls throughout its streets. The main mural is the one that is on the façade of the tourist office, work of the Alicante’s painter and muralist Gastón Castelló, who portrays his vision about Calp.

Calp has a very lively historic centre, but if you want to see it with great atmosphere, a craft market is held every Sunday, where you can find handicrafts, second-hand items, bakeries, sweets, plants, clothes, books, and organic vegetables.

Come and join us, and you will discover a surprising Calp!
