Dresden, known as the Florence of the Elbe, represents a jewel in the heart of Germany. Thanks to its Baroque works and its recent reconstruction, the capital of Saxony attracts millions of tourists from all over the world every year.
Our tour will start in front of the König-Johann Denkmal statue, on the wonderful Theaterplatz, where the historic Semperoper Theater is located. After talking about its history and its peculiarities, we will go to the Zwinger Palace, one of the symbols of this city. There we will admire its internal gardens, which are very reminiscent of Versailles and we will discover some anecdotes related to its creation. Inside the building, there are 3 famous museums: the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, the Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon and the Porzellansammlung.
Once we leave the Zwinger, our tour will continue towards the Residenzschloss. Inside the royal palace there is an art library and several important museums, including the Grünes Gewölbe, the largest jewelry collection in Europe until November 25, 2019, when some precious objects worth around a billion euros were stolen.
In the same square ( Schossplatz ) it is possible to admire another impressive work: the Hofkirche, the main Catholic church in the city. Also in this case there will be some curiosities about its construction and a few steps we will have the opportunity to discover the history of the royal dynasties of the kingdom of Saxony through the Fürstenzug mural, the largest porcelain work of art in the world.
A few meters ahead, in the Neumarkt square, we will find the most beautiful Lutheran church in Germany, the Frauenkirche. Like many other monuments in Dresden, it was destroyed after the Allied bombing in February 1945. Only from 1990 did the restoration phase begin, which ended in 2006, the year of the city's 800 'anniversary.
We will continue the tour by walking towards another important building, the Albertinum , within which are the Galerie Neue Meister and the Skulpturensammlung.
Finally, we will walk through the Brühlsche Terrasse, where you can admire the skyline of the city.
The tour will last approximately 2 hours and will end in front of the Augustusbrücke bridge, which will give you the possibility to easily reach the new part of the city (Neustadt), in case you do not want to spend more time in the old town ( Altsadt).
