Free tour in Bern: old town, legends and fun facts

Except for a few small interruptions, I have lived in Bern all my life. I love the historic old town, the public squares and delicious restaurants, and the individual quarters, which are always changing. However, I do not want to keep my knowledge to myself, but pass it on to curious tourists. My goal is that you leave Bern with a smile.

Tour description

The 1.75-2 hours in my care are a mixture of general history of the city, exciting legends, fun facts and the discovery of a district and places that you would hardly come into contact with as a tourist. This means that we will not visit tourist hotspots such as the Parliament building, Bärenpark and Zytglogge.

The tour starts at the Rosengarten with a beautiful view of Bern. After a brief introduction, we head down the slope towards the Matte district.

There you will learn, among other things, why Bern was important for the production of chocolate, why the inhabitants of the Matte district spoke their own language and which famous womaniser was pampered by the maids in the Badgasse.

After that, your physical condition will be slightly challenged, because you'll have to climb the 183 steps to the Münster platform. If this is not possible or you are not in the mood, you can take the elevator (CHF 1.50/ride). In the last section of the tour, I will talk about the depiction of the Last Judgment at the Münster. Furhtermore, I'll show you two objects of art in public space, which you would hardly notice as a tourist.

After the tour, you will have walked 2.4 km and expanded your knowledge. You will also receive hints and suggestions for your further stay in my beautiful hometown.

Elmar was an excellent guide. It was one of the best Free Tours I have ever done. The content was super interesting and he told us all kinds of interesting facts about the city. As we are studying German, he offered to give us the tour in German. He spoke in a very clear way and clarified all the words we didn't know. Totally recommendable. Thank you, Elmar!

Elmar is a great tour guide, very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The tour is very interesting because even though you see top tourist points you also learn so many interesting details and other spots that are not normally visited.

This type of tour is much BETTER than your average walking tour. I was looking for something less touristy and that is exactly what I got with Elmar's tour. He crafts his tour around little known facts and interesting anecdotes about Bern. Take Elmar's tour of Bern and you won't be disappointed! He is a Bern native and is very passionate about his city, and is just a very knowledgeable and personable guide. He will take you to the lesser known, but more memorable areas of the city. He put up with me and all my questions around Swiss culture and lifestyle, and was happy to offer tips on where to go in the city. The participants were all very engaged throughout and connected with each other. I highly recommend it if you have a few hours to spare. Thanks Elmar! Sarah - from New Orleans
