Polignano and its magical terraces overlooking the sea among saints, art and the notes of Domenico Modugno
Hi, I'm Eusto-FUD :) Passionate about history, art and nature, they are the key to knowing all the secrets of Puglia. Speleologist, advanced sommelier, oil taster, maître sabreur. With simplicity, I will explain the trulli, the food, the caves, the alleys, the churches and the monuments of a fantastic land called Puglia.
Tour description
With Eusto-FYD :) among the alleys, the terraces overlooking the sea of Polignano, the " Polis Nea " of the ancient Greeks. They called it «new city» because it was rebuilt in the 4th century BC by Dionysius II of Syracuse. Today it is known as the city of diving from great heights. An international 20m+ diving competition is held here every year. It is precisely by visiting those terraces overlooking the sea, which are crowded on the days of the race, that our journey begins. Terraces that allow you to see a wide horizon and the famous Grotta Palazzese from afar. Polignano is the set of many famous films. You fall in love with the stages of our journey, the Romanesque cathedral with the nativity scene by Stefano da Putignano (1503, Buonospirito chapel) and a curious Y-shaped crucifix. Our journey skirts the civic tower which has a curious 19th century clock that still works with counterweights of hand-pulled strings. Then there is the statue of the patron saint, the Sicilian San Vito. Saint to whom Domenico Modugno was also devoted, the famous Italian singer 🎼🎶 born right here in Polignano a mare. After crossing the Bourbon bridge on the Monachile blade we go to see his statue with open arms, he portrays him in the same pose as when he won the Sanremo Festival in 1958🎤🎻🎹. To close, for those who want to relax in a bar (at their own expense) typical of Polignano a mare, let's discover the famous ice cream 🍦, delicious, creamy, which also dives into the cream before being served. Or there's the special coffee ☕️, invented by Peppino Campanella decades ago, a mix of cream, amaretto, lemon zest that still captivates the palates of visitors. The visit ends under the marquis arch, the only fortified civic gate. It once had a drawbridge. The Arco Marchesale is our starting point and return point for this town overlooking the sea which a well-known tourist portal crowned in 2023 the queen of hospitality by beating 220 other competitors. Bring 👟 comfortable and the ride will be as exciting as "Flying" on a blue sea painted blue. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4IjJav7xbg&t=91s)
