What to see at Piazzale Michelangelo
Piazzale Michelangelo, from which you can admire the most beautiful view of Florence ever, was created in 1869 in honor of the famous “Divine Artist” Michelangelo Buonarroti, creator of the renowned David. In the center of the square stand a bronze replica of the statue of David and replicas of the statues found in the Medici tombs at San Lorenzo: the four Allegories—Day, Night, Twilight, and Dawn.
Abbey of San Miniato al Monte. This exquisite, beautiful church is a must-see. Upon seeing it, St. James exclaimed, “Haec est Porta Coeli”—”This is the gate of heaven.” Come with us to admire its graceful, gentle grandeur and its unique, intricate beauty.
Church of San Salvatore al Monte. This Renaissance church, sober and harmonious on the outside and characterized by elegant, refined simplicity on the inside, was one of Michelangelo’s favorites.
The Rose Garden. A beautiful, enchanting place where you can admire 400 species of roses and about 600 other botanical varieties, but that’s not all, it’s also an art garden featuring 10 statues by the artist Folon and, unexpectedly, a Japanese Shorai oasis.
Michelangelo Park. Also known as “Peace Park,” it reopened to the public in 2024. Featuring terraced areas with panoramic views, it is home to a wide variety of olive trees and offers a place to relax and picnic.
Via Crucis. This is the oldest Via Crucis in Italy, built in the form of a staircase. Recently renovated, it can now be safely walked all the way to the entrance of the Rose Garden.
