Why Visit the Jerónimos Monastery?

Constructed in the early 16th century in Gothic-Manueline style, it represents an architectural period from the reign of Manuel I.
A highlight of the monastery is the Igreja de Santa Maria de Belém, known for its unique ribbed vault, which houses the remains of Manuel I and Mary of Aragon, along with tombs of notable figures like Vasco da Gama, Luís de Camões, and Fernando Pessoa.
Additionally, visitors should see the cloister of the Jerónimos Monastery, an interior courtyard reflecting Manueline style, where the letter M appears in various carvings.
The monastery is located next to the Praça do Império, a park nearby the Belém Tower and the Monument of the Discoveries, both alongside the Tagus River.
