We really enjoyed our three hours with Rodrigo, but if you are the type who likes to check off a long list of city sights and attractions, this might not be the tour for you. What you will receive, though, is a very balanced, detailed, and often amusing explanation of Argentinian history, immigration, politics, the economy, and architecture as you wander through the downtown core. He also discussed the requirement to look up when touring downtown Buenos Aires, because doing so exposes one to all the city’s marvellous domes, spires, cupolas, and of course a gargantuan Lionel Messi mural, painted in a remarkable five days. Our free walking tour group size was just over 20, and although this may seem to be large, it worked out quite well. Rodrigo proved himself to be a capable and engaging guide, and we are very glad to have spent three hours with him.

From power to influence, to love to tragedy, Nicholas covered it all during our two hours with him. Covering 5.5 hectares, Recoleta is a 200-year-old working cemetery jammed with a wildly eclectic selection of tombs, and where the immense talents of stonemasons, sculptors, architects, and metalworkers are on display. Nicholas started the tour with an in-depth explanation of Recoleta’s why and when (that was clearly too long for one member of our group), and then moved into the who, what, and where as we ambled through the cemetery’s many streets. We passed the final resting place of politicians, Generals, the wealthy, and those whose names appear on many city streets and landmarks. He told us about the immense heartbreak of those who died too young, and the ghosts they leave behind. Peering through glass tomb windows we often saw stacks of family caskets, as well as narrow and steep stairs leading downwards to multiple levels of underground chambers. Some tombs were shiny and clean, others were crumbling and decrepit, with gates and doors ajar, and glass shattered. Nicholas even pointed out the resting spot of the aspirational groundskeeper who wanted nothing more than to be interred amidst those who he tended. He saved Eva Perron’s unassuming tomb until the end and noted that sometimes 3,000 persons per day visit her. Nicholas gave a great tour, and we were very pleased with the experience. Some practical advice: arrive 10-15 minutes before tour time because you will be expected to purchase a cemetery entrance ticket. Take water and a snack because there are no concessions inside.
