I attended the Yungay tour over a month ago, and still remember every detail! As a tour guide, Claudio is not only super knowledgeable, experienced with, and passionate about Santiago’s oldest neighborhood, he’s extremely engaging; time just flew by. At first I was rather hesitant to take the tour on this particular day, since no one else showed up, but, in fact, am glad I did — During this solo excursion, Claudio allowed me special exhibitions, and extra time in certain places, all of which would not have been permitted with a large group. I had a personal moment nearing the end of the tour as he and I sat quietly on a pew inside a beautiful church while he articulated, with a preacher’s conviction, a miraculous story in which the saint’s statue adjacent to the alter was unperturbed during a major earthquake. After Claudio and I parted parted ways, I returned to the same pew where we had sat, meditating in contemplation upon the mysterious saint; and, after making my prayers (as I once did in my bygone days as a Catholic) and giving thanks to the divine, took up Claudio’s suggestions for nearby coffee and almuerzo. I would recommend the Yungay tour with Claudio for anyone — tourist or local — interested in gaining a deeper knowledge of Santiago’s oldest neighborhood, while also enjoying its unique blend of history and culture, all with with a Santiago-born native. Macarena was the guide we hoped for. She led us through her beautiful home city and gave us a another perspective Valparaiso. She told us a lot of information on all kinds of topics such as history, art and in general the people of Valparaiso. I have been to many free walking tours all over the world but this one definitely stands out! Thank you Macarena for showing Valparaiso to us.
