A Walk Through the Corners of the Old Town

I warmly invite you to take a walk through the most important corners and places of Prague's Old Town.

We begin our walk at the meeting point (Palach Square) in front of the entrance to the Prague Philharmonic, the so-called Rudolfinum. After familiarizing ourselves with the surrounding buildings, we head directly into the heart of the former Jewish town, later known as Josefov. Here, we will briefly learn about the history of the Jewish population and the preserved monuments of Jewish architecture. Just a few steps from the Jewish Quarter is Prague's oldest marketplace (the so-called Old Town Market), known among Czechs as "Staromak." The entrance to the market is marked by the beautiful Baroque Church of St. Nicholas. In the market square itself, I will show you the main attractions, such as the Church of Our Lady before Týn and the Marian Column. I will mention the famous Czech preacher Jan Hus, and then we will continue to the oldest part of the Old Town, the so-called Týn, also known as Ungelt. I will bring you closer to the history of this part and we will take a look at the architecture. Our walk continues to the nearby St. James Church with the Minorite Monastery. We will also look at the adjacent Menhart Palace and reach the famous Royal Road (Celetná Street). You will learn what the city walls once looked like. We continue our walk towards the Fruit Market, where two magnificent buildings stand: the Karolinum – the seat of the famous Charles University – and the Nostitz Theatre. Here you will learn more about the history of the oldest university in Central Europe and the oldest theater in Prague. From there, we delve into the depths of the so-called Prague passages and old, dark alleys that form a dense network. Via Melantrichova Street, we reach the Old Town Hall, one of the greatest attractions of the Old Town. Below the Town Hall, I will definitely tell you the story of one of Europe's most famous clocks (Orloj). Here we also end our tour.
