Carnavalet Museum: The People of Paris Exhibition

Using the 1926, 1931, and 1936 Paris censuses, the exhibition **The People of Paris, 1926-1936**, offers a fresh look at interwar Paris, enabled by the capital’s first nominative lists – unlike earlier five-year counts. Drawing on registers often used for genealogical research, it builds portraits in four stages: birthplace and citizenship, occupations, family status, and distribution across districts and even buildings. A mosaic of diverse life stories emerges, inviting visitors to better understand the city’s past and ourselves, individually and collectively.
