Good day Guru Walkers, Welcome and thank you for reaching us. 😃 Our guests have reviewed us to be the top rated GuruWalk tour operator in Cape Town and South Africa 🇿🇦. They also highly recommend us as well. In fact, we are the first GuruWalk operator in Southern Africa to reach over 100 and then 200 reviews with mostly 5 🌟 ratings. For your convenience, we have the most scheduled tours per week. My name is Michael and I am a professional registered Regional and Provincial Cultural Tourist Guide (WC12125), as well as a registered National Overnight Off Trail Mountain Adventure Trekking Tourist Guide. I was born in Cape Town and married to Bridget. She is a professional registered Cultural Tourist Guide (WC12124) as well. Together we have worked and travelled throughout South Africa, as well as in many other countries around the world. We also enjoy membership with the Cape Tourist Guide's Association. My uncle (who is still alive today) was the neighbour of Nelson Mandela when he spent almost 7 years in the jail cell right next door to Madiba, as a political prisoner on Robben Island. For more about this, you may want to book our "Oppression and Apartheid to Liberation" walking tour. We also conduct tours all across South Africa, including Sightseeing Tours, Hiking Tours, Rock Art Tours, Safaris, Adventure Tours, Wine Tours, National Parks, and more.

We'll start the tour at Heritage Square.

Oppression in Southern Africa was practiced long before European settlers arrived in 1652.

The dark side of the Cape Colony has to be the system of slavery.
Later on, the Bantu people who migrated from Central Africa and settled along the eastern section of Southern Africa, suffered a unique and harsh kind of oppression and abuse.
After the policy of apartheid was officially introduced, South Africa experienced a very troublesome era in it's history with the systematic segregation and separateness.
As a result, there was resistance that included the armed struggle, terrorism, smuggling, boycotts, sanctions and people going into exile.

You'll have an opportunity learn more about how these practices impacted the mixed race people of this region.

The evil system of apartheid was perpetuated by the assistance of various international countries and organizations who supported the racist policies of the the National Party.

The influence of leaders like Nelson Mandela was able to achieve the birth of the New South Africa whereby freedom for all is possible.  As a result, the country could open up to the world and this includes welcoming millions of visitors to our beautiful city year after year.

We are ready to welcome you!

Really insightful tour from Michael who gave us a peek into his experience growing up and coming of age through major historical moments in South Africa, as well as some of the history from farther back. Even 5 hours wouldn't be enough to cover all of the information, but the tour placed things into context and made us hungry for more information and knowledge. Enjoyable to hear Michael's perspective with the backdrop of Cape Town.
