Free Tour Old Carnival - From Pagan Gods to Little Masks
- 2 hours
- Spanish
Description
Welcome to this tour through Vegueta, Triana, and San Telmo to discover the origins of the Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and understand why, for centuries, masks, costumes, and mockery have served to transform the city and turn the world upside down.
We will start at the Plaza de Santa Ana, where we will travel back to the oldest origins of the carnival: pagan celebrations, festivals dedicated to Dionysus, the Roman Saturnalia, and the subsequent incorporation of these traditions into the Christian calendar.
We will discover why the mask allows one to temporarily become another person and how the carnival became an exceptional space where norms and hierarchies could be reversed.
We look forward to seeing you!
