We begin our tour of Hamburg's history at the Domplatz, Hamburg's birthplace and nursery, and learn how Hamburg got its name. We learn why the cathedral square is called "Domplatz" and the "Hamburger Dom" takes place in a completely different place.
We then continue our tour along Hamburg's oldest cobbled street to the Kontorhaus district, the former center of Hamburg's merchants and its brickyard.
We catch a glimpse of the Kontorhaus's prima ballerina under her pretty ballerina skirt and wonder what saltpeter has to do with Hamburg's rise to become Germany's largest port city.
We continue to the Speicherstadt, diving into the red brick gorges and their stories, clarifying what Westphalia has to do with Hamburg and why the workers lived there in a castle.
We find out what the Schutenschupser and the Ewerführer really did and why there are coffee magnates and Persians in Hamburg.
During our tour we discover the historical heritage of Hamburg and the stories behind its facades and its builders.
You can recognize me by my striking beard and the black bag on my back 😉.
Free tours do not have a set price, instead, each person gives the guru at the end of the tour the amount that he or she considers appropriate (these usually range from €10 to $50 depending on satisfaction with the tour).
