Discovering the secrets of Garbage City and St Simon's monastery

Duration: 2h
Languages: English
Guru: Abanoub
Registered on April 30, 2023

I am born and raised in “Garbage City” in Cairo, and I am a professional photographer. I work inside the Monastery of St Simon the Tanner (aka Cave Church), as a photographer and editor (video and photos) for visitors at the Mario High Ropes center. In addition, I organize tours inside the Garbage City next to the monastery, with unique experiences such as visiting a pigeon tower, visit of a recycling center, a plastic factory, and an explanation of the unique story of its inhabitants - which are overwhelmingly Christians from Upper Egypt like myself.

The tour Abanoub gave was well planned and well times, not too long not too short. You get to see interesting, authentic places you could never find on your own like where they melt plastic or all the way up in the highest pigeon tower of the area. He offers refreshing drinks and helps you to find a good taxi, he takes nice pictures and gives information. Excellent tour.

It was a memorable experience, nothing like you saw before. The religious aspects and also the way of living of the people, will make you have a different perspective of life in Cairo. It is called the trash city but it can be called the recycle city, everything is separated and can be used for something new. Welcome to the biggest carved church in the world.
