Historic Tour of Aix en Provence by a local expert

Duration: 2h and 15min
Languages: English

Passionate about history, travel, food and Aix en Provence, I love introducing this city to visitors. Nearly 1,000 tourists have gone on my tours and have left loving Aix as much as I do. Interacting and getting to know other people makes this job a true joy for me. Plus having lived in France, the US and the UK, I am completely bilingual in both French and English. Can’t wait to see you on my tour soon!

Tour description

Hello and welcome to my Historic Walking Tour of Aix en Provence where you will be able to visit 90% of the city's treasures in less than two hours. One of my many reviews sums it up well: “Absolute ripper of a walk! Edouard was a skilful tour guide who provided the right mix of history and insights, all delivered with fine humour. Would thoroughly recommend.”

We will start at the statue of Paul Cezanne near the Rotonde. You will be able to easily find me because I will be holding a blue umbrella. We will then visit:

-the Cours Mirabeau

-several picturesque fountains

-the former school of Paul Cezanne and Emile Zola

-the gothic church of Saint Jean de Malte

-several provencal squares

-a myriad of delightful gourmet shops

-Saint Sauveur Cathedral

-and much more...

You will get to meet a "local expert" who's been showing thousands of travelers the city for the last couple years. I also will provide you with good recommendations for restaurants in the city or whatever else you may want to do.

A bientôt!

Edouard

First off, the tour was advertised to be for 2 hrs 15 mins, but we finished it in 1 hr 30 mins. While this is perfectly fine, I wish it was communicated clearly beforehand. The tour route and places visited were all good and very beautiful, however I wish Edouard/Ted had shared more history about each spot as well as the whole town of Aix en Provence. At each spot, he delivered maybe 3-4 lines and a couple of personal anecdotes, which were fun but not really relevant to the tour, and then we moved on. At the end of the tour, I didn't really learn much about the town's history and people apart from my own Googling, although we did come away with some good food recommendations. I'm not sure whether it was because Ted is not a local from Aix en Provence (he shared that he lived in America and in Paris for the majority of his life, before settling in Aix some years ago) but perhaps it would be good to include more fun facts about the town and its founding, Provence history, architecture, food and wine, religion etc. to beef up his script along the whole tour. Overall, considering it was a free tour, it was not bad, but I would recommend to manage the expectations of your group, read up on the history yourself, and finally, tip only as you see fit!
