Hello! I'm Emily. I studied history at university and when I'm not giving tours I work in book publishing. The tour I'll take you on combines my insatiable enthusiasm for both: entertaining stories from London's rich and complex past. Whether you're a tourist from the UK or further afield, or perhaps a Londoner who wants to get to know your city better, you are very welcome and I look forward to meeting you.

Tour description

See some of London’s most iconic landmarks such as Big Ben and St Paul’s Cathedral while learning about their danger-ridden past.

This month marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, a conflict which transformed the British capital into a battlefield. Today it’s hard to imagine the destruction, but over a million buildings suffered bomb damage and 1 in every 6 Londoners was made homeless.

How did the folks living through this extraordinary time shelter from Nazi bombers and flying rockets? What did they do to let off steam? Where did the government wage war from? And how did Londoners choose to rebuild their smoking city once victory was won? This tour will answer these questions and more, introducing you to the brave man who drove an unexploded bomb out of central London, the best Underground station to head to in an air raid and Winston Churchill’s secret toilet.

Many London tours focus on a small area of London whereas on this tour we’ll make 15+ stops in Westminster, along the river and on Fleet Street, concluding at St Paul’s Cathedral. It's ideal for the history-curious, who want to see a bigger area of London and who like walking – comfy shoes and a big breakfast beforehand are a must!

Highlights include

  • Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament
  • A stroll through St James' Park with a view of Buckingham Palace
  • Churchill's War Rooms
  • The Old Admiralty & its 'Citadel'
  • Spy stories at the War Office
  • Bomb-damaged St Clement Danes
  • St Paul's Cathedral
