Free Tour "Zurich with a female voice"
Tour description
Discover Zurich's Old Town with me from a female perspective.
We begin at Paradeplatz, the financial heart of Zurich, where we highlight significant Swiss women, both historical and contemporary.
We visited the Fraumünster Church, where the abbesses exercised their power for nearly seven centuries, and talked about the Fraumünster Society, which keeps their legacy alive.
From Münsterbrücke, we talk about the Frauenbad, a women's spa by the river, remember Régula, the city's patron saint and martyr, and discuss the history of the witch hunt.
In Niederdorf, we will meet Emmy Hennings and Sophie Taeuber-Arp, pioneers of Dadaism at the Cabaret Voltaire.
From the Rathausbrücke we explore the role of women in Swiss politics: women's suffrage, conciliation, the army, and the Federal Council.
We visited Barbara Schaufelberger's printing shop and passed a legalized brothel to reflect on sex work and its legislation.
We will meet Hedwig ab Burghalden, whose ingenious action prevented a siege of the city.
At Lindenhof, opposite Zurich's most important university buildings, we remember Marie Heim-Vögtlin, the first Swiss doctor and pioneer of gynecology, and Mileva Einstein, the scientist and mathematician who was key to Einstein's early work.
We'll stroll down Augustinergasse, considered Zurich's most beautiful street, with its balconies that also functioned as discreet peepholes. We'll pass the former residence of Johanna Spyri, author of Heidi.
We end at Bahnhofstrasse and Central Station, where Helvetia, a female allegorical figure, symbolizes Swiss unity. We'll close under the guardian angel of Niki de Saint-Phalle, who brings strength and color to our farewell.
