Welcome to Khiva! I will introduce you not only to historical buildings, but also to the mysterious tales this city has been whispering for centuries.
We begin our journey at Ota Darvoza, the main and most impressive gate of Ichan Qala — the walled inner city of Khiva and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To visit Ichan Qala and its historical monuments, a combined entry ticket is required. Here’s what you need to know:
✅ Ticket price (as of 2025) 250000 UZS for foreigners (approx. 18/20USD). You can buy the ticket with cash or card. Valid for the entire day — you can explore at your own pace before or after the tour. You can buy tickets right at Ota Darvoza gate. The ticket is valid for 48 hours.
“Heyvah!” – A Well of Sweet Water
Long ago, when this land was nothing but desert, a traveler discovered a well unlike any other. Its story became so famous that it is said to have given the city its very name. The well still exists in Ichan-Kala, waiting for those curious enough to find it.
1. Ichan Qala (Inner City) – UNESCO World Heritage Site
• The heart of Khiva’s history, embraced by ancient walls.
2. Kalta Minor Minaret
• An unfinished giant of turquoise bricks, with a legend involving rulers, rivalry, and a sudden halt in construction. Its mystery has made it the most recognizable symbol of Khiva.
3. Muhammad Aminkhan Madrasah
• The largest madrasah in Khiva, now serving a new purpose while preserving its grand architecture.
4. Juma Mosque
• Unique for its forest of wooden columns and its gentle natural light.
5. Tash Khovli Palace
• Once home to Khiva’s khans, it is said to hide a network of secret passages. Their purpose? That’s a story you’ll hear when we’re there.
6. Pahlavon Mahmud Mausoleum
• A revered site of pilgrimage, rich in artistry and devotion.
7. Kuhna Ark (Old Ark)
• Former residence of the khans, complete with reception halls, a mosque, and towers.
8. Islam Khoja Minaret and Madrasah
• The tallest minaret in Khiva, offering breathtaking views to those who climb it.
9. Allakuli Khan Madrasah, Caravanserai, and Tim Bazaar
• A lively hub of trade, culture, and tradition.
10. City Walls and Gates (Ota Darvaza)
• The grand entrances and exits to Khiva’s living history.
