Tokyo Christian Sites & History Walking Tour
This walking tour starts at Tsukiji Station, best known for the Outer Market and an Indian-style Buddhist temple. But just a few minutes on foot from there, you'll find some of Tokyo's oldest Christian sites, openly visible, unlike the churches of the Edo period, when Christianity was forbidden in Japan.
Whether you're Christian or simply interested in Tokyo history, architecture and the influence of Christian missionaries on modern Japanese society, this tour is for you.
On the tour, we'll visit:
- the oldest Christian church in Tokyo, founded in 1874
- St. Luke's International University and Hospital (outside visit)
- Kyobunkwan Christian bookstore
- and other historic landmarks connected to Japan's modernization and the first foreign settlement in Tokyo in late 19th century
Come discover the Tsukiji and Ginza area beyond seafood and luxury shopping.
Accessibility: The longest continuous walking stretch on this tour is about 15 minutes.
The tour lasts 3 hours
Available in German and English
Guide: Ekaterina
