Understanding Nice – from border town to place of longing

Free Walking Tour of Nice

Discover Nice on an entertaining and engaging walking tour full of exciting stories, surprising details and fascinating insights into the past of this special city.
We begin on Castle Hill with a breathtaking panoramic view of the city, sea, and harbor. Here you'll learn why Nice was built on this very spot and how the former fortress shaped the city's history.
Next, we'll explore the winding streets of the Old Town (Vieux Nice) with its lively squares. Historical maps and old photographs will illustrate how Nice has changed over the centuries. Finally, we'll walk along the Promenade des Anglais to the Place Masséna with its famous fountain.

During the tour you will learn interesting facts about:
  • the origins of the ancient settlement of Nikaia
  • the fortress of Nice and its destruction by Louis XIV.
  • Catherine Ségurane and the Siege of 1543
  • the Rue Droite , once the most important street in Nice
  • Place Rossetti and the Sainte-Réparate Cathedral
  • the Cours Saleya and the famous flower market
  • the traditional midday cannon
  • the Promenade des Anglais and Nice's rise to a winter holiday destination
  • the Opéra de Nice and the social life of the 19th century
  • the Place Masséna and the Fontaine du Soleil

You'll also receive my personal tips for Nice and the surrounding area to make your stay on the Côte d'Azur a truly special experience! See you soon!

Guiding since 2023
I’m Franziska, and I love exploring places on foot - taking my time and noticing the little details that are easy to miss. Beyond the classic highlights, I’m especially interested in the stories behind the story: traces of the past, small quirks, and the things that really give a place its character. Here in Nice, the city I now call home, I follow exactly these questions and I’d love to explore this special place together with you.

Meeting point:Imbiss Comptoir des AngesWe'll meet at the "Comptoir des Anges" snack bar on the castle hill. From here, you'll already have a breathtaking view, perfect for taking some initial photos. I'll be there about 15 minutes before the tour starts to welcome you; you'll recognize me by the lavender folder I'll be carrying. You can reach the meeting point either via one of the paths leading up to the castle or conveniently by taking the free elevator (Ascenseur du Château). In either case, please allow plenty of time – especially in summer, there can be a wait for the elevator (but at least you'll be waiting in the shade). If you arrive a little early, you can treat yourself to a crêpe or a cold drink at the snack bar.Open in Google Maps
