Roma Neighbourhood: Artists, Rebels & Outsiders

The tour lasts 2 hours
Available in English, Spanish and French

Description

Why has Roma attracted so many artists, writers, rebels and foreigners throughout its history?

Join me on a 2-hour walk through one of Mexico City's most fascinating neighborhoods and discover the unexpected stories behind its streets.

We'll travel from the creation of the elegant Colonia Roma at the beginning of the 20th century to the arrival of Surrealists, European refugees and the Beat Generation.

Along the way, we'll meet fascinating figures such as Leonora Carrington, André Breton, Ramón López Velarde, William S. Burroughs and Jack Kerouac, and discover the places connected to their lives, friendships, ideas and adventures in Mexico City.

We'll also explore the Roma of Luis Buñuel and Los olvidados, and see how a neighborhood once designed for Mexico City's upper classes became a magnet for outsiders and a cultural meeting point.

This is a tour about art, literature, immigration, rebellion and the many different people who found a home in Mexico City.

Come walk, discover and see Roma beyond its cafés and beautiful buildings.

Hi, I'm your guide Charlotte! I'm originally from France, but Mexico City has been my home for the past 16 years. Over all these years, I've fallen in love with this incredible city — its neighborhoods, its history, its culture and, especially, the stories you don't always find in guidebooks. I particularly love Roma, a neighborhood I've explored through its architecture, artists, writers, musicians and fascinating characters. As a foreigner who has made Mexico City my home, I also love sharing the city from a different perspective: combining Mexican history and culture with the curiosity of someone who arrived here from abroad. My tours are not about memorizing dates. They're about discovering the people, stories and cultural details that make a place truly memorable. Come walk with me and discover a different side of Roma! 🇲🇽
