Wall Special - In the Death Strip

The tour lasts 1 hour
Available in Italian

Description

THE BORDER MACHINE

On Bernauer Strasse, you'll find one of the very few places in Berlin where you can see the entire border system: wall, border strip, watchtowers, fences, and surveillance routes. It's the most comprehensive place to understand how the Berlin Wall actually functioned.

We'll retrace the images, stories, and places that made this street one of the most powerful symbols of the Cold War. We'll discover what really lay behind the word "Wall" and why it's here that Berlin retains some of the most striking traces of its division.

An intense and concentrated experience, in the place where the Wall can still truly be seen.

The tour lasts about an hour and ends at the Nordbahnhof, at the Wall Documentation Center. From there, you can continue on your own with a visit to the films about the East-West border, which last about 30 minutes.

To complete your Sunday experience, you can then take the tram to Mauerpark, among street food, street artists and vintage markets.

The Berlin Together Free Tours are structured as a single itinerary and designed to complement each other, without overlapping in terms of stops or content. I recommend starting with "Berlin Together Free Tour – Places of History," the introductory tour dedicated to the major transformations that have shaped Berlin and Europe over the last century. The "Berlin Together Free Tour" is particularly suitable if you've decided to take just one guided tour of Berlin. If you're planning on taking other free tours in Italian, it's the best way to begin exploring the city. Our other free tours delve into specific themes of Berlin's history and identity: the Cold War, the GDR, and the Wall; the memorials to the victims of Nazism; the historic center; street art; and the capital's most iconic neighborhoods, Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg. About Ismaele, your guide in Berlin: "A native Italian speaker, I've been living in Berlin for 17 years and am a full-time tour guide. My goal is to share history, knowledge, culture, and anecdotes to help you truly understand and appreciate this city, which I'm truly in love with." Since 2025, Ismaele has been a full-time tour guide with Berlino Insieme, of which he is the founder. During the tours, you'll also receive practical tips on museums, festivals, neighborhoods, restaurants, nightlife, and everything else that can help you experience Berlin more consciously. All your questions are welcome. See you soon!
