Embark on a journey through time to explore medieval Catalan villages. This experience will take you through the volcanic landscapes of La Garrotxa while visiting four captivating towns: Vic, Besalú, Santa Pau, and Castellfollit de la Roca.
Medieval Towns Tour of Garrotxa
Between 8:30 am and 9:30 am, your pick-up will be arranged from your hotel in Barcelona, and our tour will commence with a scenic drive around Plaça Catalunya and Passeig de Gràcia. During the ride in the minibus, you will observe Gaudí's iconic structures, including Casa Batlló and La Pedrera, as we depart from the urban center.
After approximately an hour on the road, we will reach Vic, our initial destination. Accompanied by a guide, you will delve into the town's intriguing medieval history, discovering pivotal moments like the 9th-century Saracen invasion. Key monuments, including the Cathedral, the Episcopal Palace, and a Roman temple, will be explored as we witness their remarkable exteriors.
Prior to continuing our journey, you will have one hour of leisure time to savor the delicious local cuisine in Vic.
Our exploration will lead us through the volcanic terrain of the Natural Park of La Garrotxa towards Santa Pau. Here, you'll participate in a guided tour of this picturesque medieval village, which dates back to the 13th century.
Next, we will visit another enchanting village of the inland Costa Brava, Castellfollit de la Roca, named for its position atop a prominent basalt cliff. As we wander through the narrow streets, we will arrive at the church of Sant Salvador, boasting a viewpoint with stunning vistas of the surrounding mountains and the Fluvià River.
To conclude our adventure, our final stop will be Besalú, home to one of Catalonia's most well-preserved medieval ensembles. You will explore its historic center, recognized as a National Historic and Artistic Monument, admiring significant structures such as the medieval bridge and the monastery of Sant Pere. Additionally, we will uncover the impact of the Jewish community that resided here from the 9th to the 15th centuries.
The tour will wrap up with your drop-off at the hotel between 6:30 pm and 7:30 pm.
