Embark on a journey to the 9th century and explore the Roman remains of Cardona Castle, a striking medieval landmark located near Barcelona. This enriching experience also includes a visit to remarkable salt mines and the opportunity to savor local tapas and wines!
Trip to Cardona & Montserrat
Your adventure begins with a pick-up from your hotel in Barcelona at the designated time, followed by a bus ride to the town of Cardona. After approximately 90 minutes, we will arrive in this historic destination, renowned for the Salt Mountain Cultural Park and one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Spain.
The first highlight of our journey is the Cardona Mountain. Spanning over 100 hectares, this potassium salt mine is among the most significant globally and continues to expand every year. We will descend 86 meters to observe the ancient stalactites and stalagmites formed from salt, while learning about the valley's industrial history.
Next, our exploration will take us to Cardona Castle. This 886 fortress, perched atop a promontory, showcases a blend of Romanesque architecture accented with Gothic elements, transporting us back to the Middle Ages. The castle's strategic location offers breathtaking views of the Cardener river valley and the Saline valley.
We will then proceed with a guided visit to the historic center of Cardona, a trading hub that played a crucial role in regional commerce, serving as a meeting point for travelers from southern France and the Pyrenees. The medieval charm of this town is sure to captivate you!
Our journey will continue with a visit to Montserrat, where we will catch sight of its distinctive jagged peak. Our first stop will be the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat, which houses the revered patron saint of Catalonia.
Finally, we will return to Barcelona, concluding our tour with a total duration of around 10 hours.
Instructions
We'll pick you up from your hotel at the agreed time. We recommend being at the meeting point at least 15 minutes before the tour starts.
You won't be allowed to enter the Montserrat Monastery wearing tank tops, shorts or sandals. We recommend that you wear comfortable shoes throughout the excursion.
