Explore the ancient wonders of southern England on a day trip from London. This journey takes you to the iconic Stonehenge, the lesser-known stone circle of Avebury, and the prehistoric burial site of West Kennet Long Barrow. Each landmark holds a unique history filled with legends and mysteries waiting to be uncovered.
Tour Details
At the designated time, you will meet at your chosen starting point and embark on a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle for a day rich in exploration and scenic views.
After approximately a 2-hour drive, the first stop is West Kennet Long Barrow, one of the largest Neolithic burial tombs in Britain, dating back over 5,000 years. This chambered tomb offers a unique insight into prehistoric life. Accompanied by your guide, you'll ascend the gentle hill to enter the burial chambers and learn the stories surrounding their construction. From this point, you can also view Silbury Hill, the largest prehistoric man-made mound in Europe, comparable in size to the Egyptian pyramids.
Next, the tour continues with a brief 10-minute drive to Avebury, a quaint village situated within the largest stone circle in the world. Unlike Stonehenge, here you can closely approach the standing stones and even stroll among them. Avebury is part of a larger UNESCO World Heritage Site that encompasses Stonehenge and various other Neolithic structures. These sites are connected to ancient pagan rituals, astronomical alignments, and contemporary Druidic traditions, making them historically and spiritually significant.
A short walking tour will be conducted around the site, followed by some free time to further explore and enjoy a meal at one of the local eateries.
After spending around 2 to 2.5 hours in Avebury, the journey proceeds to the renowned Stonehenge. Equipped with an audio guide, you’ll have 2 hours to explore this mesmerizing monument at your own pace. Whether your interest lies in its astronomical alignments, the various myths surrounding it, or simply its immense scale and enigma, Stonehenge is sure to leave a remarkable impression.
Upon concluding the visit, you will return to London, arriving at Victoria after approximately 10 to 11.5 hours in total.
