This excursion from Prague to the Terezín Concentration Camp provides an opportunity to reflect on the victims of political and racial oppression that occurred during the Nazi regime in World War II.
Terezín Concentration Camp Excursion
Situated in the northern Czech Republic, approximately one hour from Prague, Theresienstadt (known as Terezín in Czech) was established as a ghetto by the Nazi SS during the World War II period.
Following the establishment of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia on March 16, 1939, by Nazi Germany, local minorities faced increasing persecution.
In this grim setting, the Terezín ghetto and transit camp was constructed, functioning from November 24, 1941, to May 9, 1945. Numerous Jews and others targeted by the Nazis met their deaths there.
Today, this somber location serves as a tribute to the victims of Nazi atrocities.
Excursion to Terezín from Prague
At the appointed meeting time, we will gather in central Prague and embark on our bus journey to Terezín. The trip will take roughly 60 minutes, following the same railway route used to transport prisoners to the camp.
Upon our arrival at the former ghetto, we will walk through the National Cemetery and enter the concentration camp, allowing for introspection as we trace the path taken by the prisoners upon their arrival.
During our visit, we will explore the key areas of the Terezín concentration camp, including:
- Registration office
- Clothing warehouse
- Cell courtyards
- Execution wall
- Cemetery complex
- Morgue
Additionally, we will tour the Ghetto Museum, where various artifacts and artworks shed light on the daily existence of prisoners in Terezín. Currently, this Czech town houses around 3,000 residents who live alongside sites transformed into museums and memorials dedicated to remembering the victims.
After our guided exploration of the Terezín concentration camp, we will return to the original meeting point in Prague, concluding this activity that lasts roughly 5.5 to 6 hours.
