I can absolutely recommend enjoying this tour and adding to your knowledge of local culture.
Ben gives a fantastic tour of Kyoto. I can wholeheartedly recommend taking this tour, preferably on your first day in the city.
I didn't get to take the tour, as the night before the tour the guide mentioned that others had canceled, I might try for Wednesday (it was his suggestion, but it is not possible for me), and then, even though this is advertised as a free tour (with the traveler deciding on the amount to give), I was asked if I would pay a specific amount of money. If you are willing to risk a late cancellation from the guide, you might try this tour, but I was left scrambling to find a different option.
