Discovering the History of NYC Catacombs
Constructed between 1809 and 1815, the catacombs beneath the Basilica of St. Patrick's Old Cathedral functioned as an esteemed burial site for bishops, clergy, benefactors, and trustees associated with the cathedral. These subterranean chambers feature 35 family crypts and 5 clerical vaults, showcasing a blend of architectural styles that range from Romanesque to Gothic.
This resting place holds numerous prominent figures, including Bishop John Connolly, Congressman John Kelly, members of the Delmonico family, General Thomas Eckert, and philanthropist Countess Annie Leary. Among the intriguing characteristics of the catacombs are the original light fixtures designed by Thomas Edison and the tilework by Rafael Guastavino.
For over two hundred years, these catacombs were exclusively accessible to clergy, workers, and the families of those interred. In February 2017, however, the Basilica of St. Patrick's Old Cathedral opened its doors to the general public with candlelight tours, allowing visitors to experience the profound history of New York's Catholic legacy.
