Did walking tour of Tana with Keide, who was accompanied by 4 student guides. The meeting point is in front of the rail station. There wasn’t any flags or signs, so wandered the area for awhile looking for the guide before one of the students from a big group came up to me with my name on a piece of paper. Another tourist had the same problem and complained, so our guide Lova had to go guide that tourist instead. Another guide by the name of Keide (“Katy”) became our guide. Keide was an excellent young man who spoke English well and led a group of student guides and the two of us on a nice walk through Tana covering Madagasy culture and history and giving the student guides a chance to talk and practice explaining sites in English. The final stop was the Queen’s palace/museum on top of the hill (quite a strenuous uphill walk with good pacing with stops to explain things). At the Queen’s Palace there’s a 40K fee (about $10 USD) for entry; another guide by the name of Julius Caesar took over; he showed us around the Queen’s Palace/Museum; his English was heavily French accented, but he gave a good explanation of the history of Madagascar with the 3 kings and 4 queens. Afterwards, Keide walked us back to initial meeting point; total time: 4 hours. Keide was an engaging young man and a pleasure to chat with. He has been an English guide for 3 years and has a bright future ahead.
