Glad we did the tour. Our guide was responsive and helpful before and during the tour -- at the end of the tour our guide gave us a sheet with follow-up information and sources related to the tour and some good tips about free things to do in San Francisco. Our guide was highly competent and enthusiastic. We learned a great deal about some of the lessor known history of San Francisco and how it relates to the US and the world. Although the tour is 2.75 hours there was Not that much walking, so one should Not be scared off by the duration of the tour. This tour isn't particularly focused on things such as early European/American explorers and/or settlers, the gold rush, the effect of silver from Nevada, California becoming a U.S. State, etc. and/or top ten sights in the city, so if one is looking for a more traditional first walking tour in a city this might Not be it -- that said, we recommend the guide and this tour.

The tour began with Martin Luther King Jr.'s radical vision—and from there, it only got more powerful. David is a guide with bold, thought-provoking perspectives, deeply grounded in historical knowledge. He masterfully connects the past to the present, pointing out how everyday things—brand names, billboards, buildings, and even local attitudes—are rooted in the city’s layered history. He explained the concept of the "frontier"—how waves of migrants from Europe and Asia moved westward during the Gold Rush, and how that mindset is still deeply embedded in the American psyche. He also explored the historical interactions between Russian and Spanish influences in the region, weaving a rich narrative that goes far beyond the typical tour. For anyone who wants to look beyond the surface and truly understand the heart of San Francisco, this is THE TOUR for you. Follow the radical, insightful David—you won’t see the city the same way again!

There’s a lot to learn about The Civic Centre area and ruminate on changing demographics, human settlement, land ownership and wealth.
