I was born and raised in “Garbage City” in Cairo, and I am a professional photographer.
I work inside the Monastery of St. Simon the Tanner (also known as the Cave Church) as a photographer and editor (video and photos) for visitors at the Mario High Ropes Center.
In addition, I organize tours inside Garbage City near the monastery, offering unique experiences such as visiting a pigeon tower, a recycling center, a plastic factory, and sharing the unique story of its inhabitants—most of whom are Christians from Upper Egypt like myself.
Please note that the tour is not free, and the price is arranged via WhatsApp.

This is, probably, the most surprising tour you can do in Cairo. I'm my opinion it's a must.
Esperienza interessante, al di fuori dei circuiti turistici, la raccomando!
This is not a must do tour and it is NOT free or pay as you wish. The guide sent us specific rates for the tour. We still decided to go because it looked interesting based on the instagram and photos we had seen. Overall, our guide didn’t really tell us too much about the history of the place and as we were going to the church we didn’t get much of a tour from him. A random guy came up to us and told us the history. You MUST wear pants and tennis shoes. Our guide did not tell us this. You will walk through lots of trash and mud on the streets. If you want an off the road tour and see something not everyone gets to see, this is for you. It was something that not everyone goes to see so was cool in that sense. But don’t expect to learn much history about the place. The pigeon tower was cool ( took about 10min) and the church as well (45min) but the journey in between that (1.5hr+) walking through the back streets was rough. We were walking without understanding where we were going or what we were seeing. Our guide was unfortunately hard to understand and not super fluent so did not feel like we walked away with much insight or knowledge about this area. He barely talked unless prompted by us. The tour is very heavy and tough to see as people are literally working in heaps of trash. Most of the tour was spent walking through the streets. We did not spend much time seeing the factory and machines nor did we really see the upcycled products made with recyclable materials. At times it felt uncomfortable walking as women also just because of the various men saying things from the street side. (Would NOT recommend for solo female travelers or groups of only women). We would have left had it been a tour of just us. Sad to say it was one of the worst tours I’ve been on. And not worth $25.
Originally just me so guruwalk ask for very small actual payment and I was very happy with this. Tour was absolutely fabulous. Very different with very unusual experiences. I don't want to give the game away but this was just an excellent way to see another side to Cairo. Don't hesitate....book with Abanoup now.
Extremely interesting, moving and inspiring tour. Abanoup is very professional and knows everyone in the neighborhood! highly recommended.
