Michael's uncle (who is still alive today) was the neighbour of Nelson Mandela when he spent nearly 7 years in the jail cell right next door to him, between 1972 and 1979, as a political prisoner on Robben Island.

After a little bumpy start, we had a really good, informative and intense tour with Michael. He was patient and very open to answer all questions we had, even when we brushed controversial topics or difficult ones of current politics. Michael seems like a very reflective person and has experienced and actively fought for ending the Apartheid himself, which allowed us to switch into his perspective for a while. The best free walking tour I’ve ever done, hands down. Michael was the perfect tour guide for this tour. He shared his lived experience. He provided historical context and related it well to the stops on the tour. But the personal connection to what he was sharing is what made this tour so special and impactful.
