La battaglia di 500 anni per chi governa l'Inghilterra, combattuta per le strade di Londra. Questa non è una visita ai palazzi e alla pompa magna. È la storia opposta. Iniziamo alla Temple Church, dove i baroni ribelli accerchiarono il re Giovanni nel 1215 e iniziarono la lotta per la Magna Carta. A Somerset House, scopri come un re si impadronì di vasti tratti di Londra dopo aver scatenato un terremoto religioso che divise la nazione e condannò i suoi eredi.
Cammina per le strade intitolate al figlio dell'uomo più odiato d'Inghilterra, un favorito reale così detestato che i londinesi applaudirono al suo omicidio. Attraversa Trafalgar Square e incontra Carlo I a cavallo, un re certo che il suo potere provenisse solo da Dio. Poi dirigiti lungo Whitehall, la strada più potente della Gran Bretagna, fino a Banqueting House.
È qui che è successo. Il 30 gennaio 1649, Carlo I passò attraverso una finestra al piano superiore sul patibolo, l'unico re inglese mai processato ed eseguito dal proprio Parlamento. Ti troverai davanti a quella stessa finestra. La passeggiata termina alle Houses of Parliament: l'istituzione che ordinò la sua morte, poi espulse un re cattolico nella Gloriosa Rivoluzione del 1688, e lentamente, sanguinosamente, divenne la democrazia che conosciamo oggi.
Circa 3 km, per lo più pianeggiante con alcuni gradini lungo il percorso, quindi purtroppo non ideale per sedie a rotelle o passeggini. Partecipazione gratuita: lascia una mancia in base a quanto pensi che valga. Si prega di prenotare in anticipo.

Despite that, I had absolutely no idea about the huge amount of really key history lurking beneath so I firstly want to thank John for creating such a unique experience. John was a super enthusiastic guide who patiently navigated us through an historical period full of twists and turns. I'd also say this is a tour probably worth doing more than once if you can since there is just so much to learn!

I have done a few London tours that cover the more popular locations and walked past/through the stops on this route plenty of times. Despite that, I had absolutely no idea about the huge amount of really key history lurking beneath so I firstly want to thank John for creating such a unique experience. John was a super enthusiastic guide who patiently navigated us through an historical period full of twists and turns. I'd also say this is a tour probably worth doing more than once if you can since there is just so much to learn!

One of the best walking tours I’ve ever done – John was exceptional!
I absolutely loved Parliament vs King: The Long Road to Democracy. From beginning to end, John was fantastic. His knowledge of the subject is incredible, but what really sets him apart is his ability to bring history completely to life.
Rather than simply giving you dates and facts, John tells the story in a way that makes you feel as though you are actually following the events as they unfolded. The battles between Parliament and the monarchy, the personalities involved, the political intrigue and the long, complicated road towards democracy were explained brilliantly. Even the more complex parts were easy to understand and genuinely fascinating.
John has exactly what you want from a great walking-tour guide: passion, humour, enthusiasm and an obvious love for the history he is sharing. He kept everyone engaged throughout and struck the perfect balance between being informative and entertaining. There was never a moment when it felt like a history lecture — it felt like a great storyteller taking you through an extraordinary chapter of British history.
The route is also very well thought out. Stopping at the actual places connected to the events makes the stories so much more powerful, and I came away looking at London with completely different eyes.
What impressed me most was how much I learned without ever feeling overwhelmed with information. By the end, I had a much better understanding of how the relationship between Parliament, the monarchy and ordinary people evolved over centuries and helped shape the democracy we know today.
If you're considering booking this walk, do it. Whether you already love history or know very little about the subject, John will make it interesting. This is exactly what a great GuruWalk should be — informative, entertaining, memorable and delivered by someone who genuinely knows and loves their subject.

One of the best walking tours I’ve ever done – John was exceptional!
