Parliament vs King: the long road to democracy

Free walking tour in London, starting at 10:00, in November 2026: Trafalgar Square, Downing Street and Somerset House.

  • 2 hours and 15 minutes
  • English

Description

The 500-year battle for who runs England, fought out on the streets of London. This is not a tour of palaces and pageantry. It is the opposite story. We begin at Temple Church, where rebel barons cornered King John in 1215 and started the fight for Magna Carta. At Somerset House, discover how a king seized vast tracts of London after kicking off a religious earthquake that split the nation and doomed his heirs.

Walk streets named after the son of the most hated man in England, a royal favourite so loathed that Londoners cheered his murder. Cross Trafalgar Square and meet Charles I on horseback, a king certain his power came from God alone. Then head down Whitehall, the most powerful street in Britain, to Banqueting House.

This is where it happened. On 30 January 1649, Charles I stepped through an upstairs window onto the scaffold, the only English king ever put on trial and executed by his own Parliament. You will stand before that very window. The walk ends at the Houses of Parliament: the institution that ordered his death, then threw out a Catholic king in the Glorious Revolution of 1688, and slowly, bloodily, became the democracy we know today.

Roughly 3km, mostly flat with some steps along the route, so unfortunately, not ideal for wheelchairs or prams. Free to join: tip what you feel it was worth. Please book in advance.

Guiding since 2026
I'm John, your Yellow Cap Tours guide, a Londoner born and bred and a lifelong amateur historian. I've lived and worked in London and its hinterland all my life, and I still spend hours every week lost in British history. That's what I bring to every walk: a local's knowledge of the city's streets and secrets, and an enthusiast's genuine wonder at the stories behind them. Come for the landmarks, stay for the tales most visitors just walk straight past.
