Am an English speaking freelance tourist guide been doing tours for over five years. I studied tourism at the university and so passionate about nature and wildlife, and about using tourism as a tool for conservation and restoration. I volunteer with the Lake Nkuruba Nature Reserve as a conservationist ensuring the restoration of indigenous tree species and extending the forest cover. No wonder it's at this place i normally meet with the people i walk around.
Exploring Fortportal Crater Lakes!
Known for the highest concentration of crater lakes per square kilometer in the world, exploring Fortportal's crater lakes is an extraordinary experience.
Start at Lake Nkuruba where you can see over four species of monkeys and the oldest of the 52 different crater lakes around the Mountains of the Moon,
Proceed to the Ndali kasenda crater lakes, each lake has its own charm, Nyinambuga lake is one of the largest and most beautiful, now its photo appears on Uganda's 20,000 shillings banknote.
During this tour there is an option to visit the local vanilla farmer who shows you his vanilla farm, all the process from planting to pollination and harvesting, finally the drying process. However it's much better when you buy some vanilla from him otherwise he requires a small fee to show you around.
This tour goes beyond just the crater lakes as it takes you through the local villages seeing how the locals live, banana plantation, local market especially every Monday and Thursday there is a local farmers market.
You can choose to have lunch at the local restaurant or return to Lake Nkuruba Nature Reserve for lunch at the Nkuruba lakeside resort.
This tour lasts 3-4 hours but there is the option to jump on bodabodas in case you get tired along the way yet another great experience. Bodaboda is a local motorcycle taxi.

One of the biggest crater lakes we have and very beautiful lake. Indeed because of its beauty it's picture appears on the 20k Uganda shillings bank note.
This tour begins from here and at this point you expect to see the oldest of the crater lakes Nkuruba, at this same place also there is four monkey species that call it home, lots of bird species among others.
We won't necessarily hike the Rwenzori mountain 🏔️ but on a good day through out our walk we will have very nice views of these mountains of the moon. The view is very clear especially during the rainy seasons at some point snow can also be seen.
Free tours do not have a set price, instead, each person gives the guru at the end of the tour the amount that he or she considers appropriate (these usually range from €10 to $50 depending on satisfaction with the tour).
