Hi! I was born in nearby London Ontario and have lived in Burlington for the last 11 years primarily in the downtown area. I have been retired for 8 years from a long banking career. I spent my career in customer service and have made numerous presentations to groups of people. I have been involved in several charities during my adult life. I love Burlington and I aim to be an enthusiastic promoter of our small but great city.
Welcome to Burlington. We are a city in the Regional Municipality of Halton and forms the western end of the Greater Toronto Area. Burlington is also part of the Hamilton metropolitan census area. It has a population of approximately 190,000 people.
We will see some historic and important buildings in Burlington along with other landmarks of interest. I have approximately 40 points of interest to show you and/or talk about which includes City Hall, 2 historic churches, 3 monuments, 5 artworks and several landmarks. I will also talk about famous Burlingtonians and their significance to our city as well as some little known facts and secrets of our fine city. The tour starts at Burlington City Hall. We will then go to nearby Veterans Square followed by a viewing of Eglise Saint-Philippe. We will then wander down Ontario street and Victorian Vernacular, late Victorian and Gothic Revival mansions.
This will lead us to St. Luke Anglican Church which has a special meaning to Burlington. A quick visit to Apeldoorn park is followed by a stroll down Nelson street to see the Mariner houses. Continuing on, we will pass by the Art Gallery and 2 outdoor sculptures. Following that we will walk to the beautiful waterfront at Spencer Smith park.
In the distance we will see the Skyway bridge linking Burlington to the Niagara region and the iconic Burlington lift bridge. A walk along the waterfront we can see beautiful Lake Ontario and the Brant Street pier. We will walk by waterfront restaurants and pubs that you can enjoy following the tour. We will also move past Village Square and more eateries and outdoor art sculptures. The walk comes to end near the downtown core and at our Performing Arts Centre.
It is approximately 3.5 kilometres and will take 90 minutes - 2 hours depending on your walk pace and questions.
After the tour, I hope you have learned a lot about the significance of Burlington and enjoy the beautiful downtown area, both from a historical and also from a modern day perspective.
I will be by the fountain in City hall courtyard carrying a striped umbrella.
Free tours do not have a set price, instead, each person gives the guru at the end of the tour the amount that he or she considers appropriate (these usually range from €10 to $50 depending on satisfaction with the tour).
