Description
Tour Description:
First things first: You are welcome to spontaneously bring another person with you!
However, I am also available for larger groups upon special request!
Let me take you on my tour through Baixa, the historic lower city of Lisbon, including viewpoints, music, history, food, and much more!
The meeting and ending point is the boat terminal at Praça do Comércio, the “Terminal Fluvial Terreiro do Paço,” where you will also find restrooms.
Where are we going? What is this about?
1. Meeting and ending point: Terminal Terreiro do Paço: Practical information and introduction
2. Trading Place: Equestrian statue of José I: The earthquake, the tsunami, and the stubborn King José I.
3. Trading Place: Site of the 1908 regent's assassination: A bouquet of flowers in the fight against lead bullets, the Germans, and Portugal.
4. Through Baixa to Praça Dom João da Câmara: The Santa Justa Elevator
5. Hotel Avenida Palace: James Bond is from Lisbon and the German ambassador (unintentionally) turns Portugal into a republic.
6. The Dominican Church: The massacre of the Jews and the secular struggle of Portuguese Jews for visibility at the UN… It's a matter of life and death!
7. The delights of Manteigaria Silva: black pork, codfish, and the most popular Portuguese snack comes from Berlin!
8. CDS party headquarters at Largo do Caldas: Bunk bed mattress for €400/month? Or would you prefer a 4-bedroom apartment in an old building in the city center for €40 a month? Welcome to Lisbon!
9. Break at Miradouro do Chão do Loureiro: dreamy view of Baixa
10. Alfama/ Rua da Saudade: Fado and Brazilian Funk: Both are Portugal!
11. Roman Amphitheater: Did the inhabitants of Cologne already enjoy eating Portuguese canned fish in Roman times?
12. Aljube Prison Museum: The prudish dictator: forbidden kisses, God forbid Coca-Cola, and why Portugal bombed Angolan villages with napalm in the 70s
13. Catedral: The world has felt at home in Portugal since the 16th century. An African village in Lisbon? Portugal and its former colonies today
14. Largo José Saramago: Conclusion/ Questions/ Practice/ “Goodbye”
I look forward to seeing you!
