Complete Freetour of Avilés: Medieval, Baroque, and Modern
Description
Explore the most important places in the town and discover the most historical and charming corners with the help of a local Avilés guide.
In the 17th century, a profound urban transformation of medieval walled Avilés took place. A new Town Hall was built outside the walls in what was called the Plaza de Fuera de la Villa. This, combined with a demographic boom, caused the center of power to shift, and the nobility and wealthy people ventured to build their homes outside the walled area as well. New streets filled with stately buildings were created, forming the so-called Avilés Baroque expansion.
The arcaded Galiana Street will reveal some secrets to us, starting with the origin of its name. We will cross the Ferrera Park, the former private gardens of the Marquises of Ferrera, and continue along Rivero, the longest and busiest pedestrian street in the town.
We will delve into one of the moments of greatest splendor of the town, when the nobility displayed their greatest shows of power, and we will connect with the more recent past, when the rising bourgeoisie and the "indianos" began to occupy an increasingly important place in Avilés.
