The tour lasts 2 hours

Description
How do you rebuild a city after total destruction?
Most visitors to Hiroshima learn about the atomic bombing. This walking tour tells the story of what happened next.
Together, we will follow the remarkable story of Hiroshima's first democratically elected mayor, Shinzo Hamai. An A-bomb survivor himself, he helped lead the city through one of the most difficult periods in its history. Through the places where key decisions were made, you'll discover how Hiroshima transformed from Japan's former military center into an international symbol of peace.
This tour is about much more than the bombing itself. It is the story of how a destroyed city found hope, rebuilt its communities, invested in its future, and became a symbol of peace.
Perfect after visiting the Peace Memorial Museum, this tour answers the question many visitors are left with: How did Hiroshima rebuild? It explores the city's recovery through the choices, challenges, and hopes of the people who lived through it.
The meeting point is just across the street from the A-Bomb Dome, making it easy to join after exploring the Peace Memorial Park and Museum.
The walk covers approximately 1.4 km (0.9 miles) at a relaxed pace with frequent stops. No previous knowledge is needed, and there will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions.
By the end of the tour, you'll have your own answer to one simple question:
How do you rebuild a city after total destruction?
Guide: Thomas
Guiding since 2025PRO
Thomas moved to Hiroshima eight years ago after falling in love with both the city and the woman who would become his wife. They first met in a 7-Eleven, where she won a loaf of bread in a small lottery. She didn’t need it, so she gave it to him, and from that simple moment their story began. They later married in a bakery on Hiroshima’s main street, a place they still visit together because it holds a special place in their hearts.
In his spare time, Thomas enjoys studying for different qualifications. He has passed the Japanese national cooking exam and is now preparing for the Japanese sake certification while working toward becoming a nationally licensed guide. As a Hiroshima tourism ambassador, he is honored to share the city’s complex history and the charm of the place he is proud to call home.
