The tour lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes
Available in English

Description

Discover Calgary's past on this 2 1/2 hour Free Walking Tour, designed for curious travelers who want more than just dates and buildings. This 5k walk, led by a born and raised Calgarian,  dives deep into the stories, contradictions, and cultures that shaped Calgary into one of the world’s most diverse cities.

We will explore a history of colonialism and controversy, while also walking though some of the most picturesque urban landscapes. Along the way, you’ll hear personal stories, historical anecdotes, and insights into everyday life in Calgary today.
Starting at the Palliser Hotel, we will travel east along 9th and 8th Avenues exploring the sights such as the Calgary Tower, Stephen Avenue Mall, Olympic Plaza, Arts Commons and City Hall. After traveling through the atrium of the Calgary Municipal Building, we will visit the Calgary Public Library, the legendary King Eddy Hotel and Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre. Continuing on east, we will arrive at The Confluence, the site of the original Fort Calgary.
Here we will turn south and walk to where the Bow and Elbow Rivers meet. The final leg of the tour will take us west along the Bow River, past the Harry Hays Federal Building to Calgary's Chinatown. Ending the tour here gives visitors many options for further exploration.
Tip based tour, you decide the value.
Pace-friendly & engaging, designed to be informative, relaxed, and human. The route is flat with two sets of stairs to navigate.
Come walk with us and explore Calgary's past and future.

I have lived in Calgary all my life and love to travel! Many of my favorite experiences have been free walking tours in cities I have visited. I also love history and Canada and Calgary have their fair share. After 24 years of teaching mostly social studies, I have put my passion and experience to good use in creating this one-of-a-kind tour.
